Jamie is a main character in 28 Years Later.
Biography
Jamie was young when the Original Outbreak of the Rage Virus took place. He has been living in the survivor commune on Holy Island for at least fifteen years and has partaken in multiple expeditions to the mainland. He presumably married his wife[2] Isla and had their son[3] Spike during this time. At some point, Isla became unwell and began displaying symptoms of severe confusion, causing a rift in the marriage.
28 Years Later
Twenty-eight years after the Infection destroyed Great Britain, Jamie takes his son Spike to the mainland as part of a coming-of-age ritual, armed with bows and arrows. They encounter various Infected, during which Spike earns his first kill when set upon by a family of Slow-Lows. As they emerge from a forest, they sight and are detected by a pack of Fast Ones, led by an Alpha. They flee to an abandoned house, with Jamie downing multiple Infected, and take refuge in the attic, forced to wait until low tide so they can cross the causeway back to Holy Island. Spike notices a blazing fire in the distance and asks if it's another village, but Jamie claims he doesn't know what it is.
When a massive herd of deer gallop past the house, the aged structure gives way and begins collapsing. Jamie takes Spike and narrowly escapes, then together sneak to the coastline, satisfied that the water has receded enough to wade back to the gate. However, halfway across, they spot the Alpha giving chase, prompting Jamie to grab Spike and sprint towards the island. As the Alpha is about to reach them, Jamie covers Spike in an attempt to shield him, until guards on the wall manage to fire a flaming ballista at the Alpha, killing him.
Jamie celebrates their return with the rest of the commune, entertaining them with exaggerated stories and dubbing his son a 'giant-killer'. Drunk and unaware that Spike has left the party, Jamie steps outside with Rosie, a schoolteacher, and engages in sexual activity with her. He stumbles home the next morning. While Jamie prepares breakfast, Spike confronts him, stating that he spoke with Sam and learnt that there is a doctor on the mainland named Kelson who could help Isla. Jamie reveals that during a past expedition, he saw Kelson arranging hundreds of corpses to burn in a fire, and asserts that the doctor is someone to be feared.
Spike reveals witnessing Jamie's affair with Rosie and accuses him of wanting Isla to die. Jamie smacks Spike in a fit of rage, but immediately shows regret and follows his son upstairs to apologise. Spike pushes Jamie out of the bedroom and threatens him with a knife, after which Jamie leaves the house, punching a hole in the wall on his way. Spike then sneaks out later that day with his mother to find Kelson.
Spike returns to the island after his trip, leaving a baby and a note in a basket by the gate. Jamie reads the note, detailing the baby's origins and stating that Spike will return when he is ready to do so. Distraught, Jamie rushes out of the house, passes the gate, and wades into the high-tide water, screaming.
Personality
Jamie is shown to be a hardened survivor, having joined multiple expeditions to the mainland during his time at Holy Island. He cares for his son Spike and wishes for him to be the same, going as far as to take him on his first expedition at twelve years old, despite a member of the leadership council stating that fourteen or fifteen is the average age to do so. He mentors Spike but encourages him to score his own kills, and orders him not to look away when they happen upon a bloodied and restrained infected in an abandoned house. When Spike doubts himself after failing to kill any Infected during a chase, Jamie wastes no time in assuring his son that he did a good job.
However, Jamie is not above putting himself first. His wife's deteriorating health causes him to stray and start an affair with another woman, who also has a partner. When confronted about this by his son, Jamie loses his temper and smacks Spike on the cheek, then further shows rage by denting a wall when asked to leave the house. Despite this, he demonstrates clear anguish upon learning that Spike does not plan to return from the mainland until he feels ready.
